Basque Country surf

Going on a #surftrip is as much the chance to surf new waves as meeting new people.

There are still too many surfers who behave like the worst #kook #tourists, brandishing their tight schedules and cost of flight as a pass for entitlement not only to their spot at the peak, but also to the formatted expectations set by the surf mag covers and travel charters. Not only their attitude inevitably fuels #localism, but they also miss the uniqueness of the place they are at.

At #Swellbound, we love the #basquecountry for being Europe's own little Hawaii, with great Atlantic waves, a strong and proud culture, food to die for, and the friendliest locals who will be there for you if you take half a second to get to know them, a threshold some tourists still find unacceptable. So be it! It is self-regulation at its best if they stay out of the basque lineup!

So if you want to make the best of your next trip there, pause, chat in your pidgin French and if you are driving #swellbound past Biarritz, swing off the main road just before #Guéthary and say hi to Esteban at #Prosurf. He's surfed the world over a couple of times, knows the Atlantic coast like the back of his hand and has stories to the truckload. Most importantly, he has the rarest #aloha spirit which reminds us how good it is to be part of the surfing #ohana. #Eskerrikasko!
