Sam Bleakley and cultural imperialism

#Surfwriter and #longboarder @sambleakley1 presented his book Mindfulness & Surfing @finisterre_london yesterday.
Somehow the talk quickly went on to #culturalexchange when #travelling, as Sam seemed to struggle himself with the western representation issues so brilliantly illustrated by @Barbiesavior (maybe because of his own barbielike good looks). It was very refreshing to see a surfer honestly explore his own impact on the cultures he seeks to be an ambassador for, how imagery always has a subtext etc... If #culturalimperialism is starting to emerge as a concept in the surfing community's consciousness, there is hope that one day the big #surfbrands and @wsl of this world won't expect us to watch with a straight face videos of flowy blonde surfer girls & boys aiding brown children in godforsaken lands which seem to have nothing for themselves bar amazing waves.
